No Poo. almost two weeks in

hey so here's an update about how my hair's doing. I can't believe it's only been a few days. I feel like i've been mixing baking soda and apple cider vinegar, honey, lemon solutions for many moons already. And i haven't even done it that many times. So far every other day washing has been working well. from these first days i have learned two things. One, I need to find a more feasible method of mixing and storing my products. Not to say that it's terribly inconvenient to gather the ingredients in my bathroom every other day, but i feel that I could be more efficient. The second thing is that I would prefer for my hair to not smell like vinegar. The smell is not overpowering by any means, and doesn't linger around me, but according to a couple helpful noses I know that I smell like vinegar only very close to the nose. I believe the addition of honey and lemon to the conditioner has helped this, but also I believe that there is a way for me to smell pleasant, possibly through the addition of essential oils. so I'll look into that a bit and report back. I could also resolve this concern by putting product in my hair afterwards, but i fear that would introduce more suspicious chemicals into contact with my body.

Additonally, after clearing out most of the hair products from my shower all that was left to inspect was my body wash by Softsoap.

yup, here it is. an image of the soap i use.

Upon a quick check of the ingredients list I found that I have yet to escape from SLS because I still rub it over my body everyday. So I suppose on my next trip to the independent supermarket i'll have to check the hippie soaps.

Built to Spill "The Weather"

I've never been a person who is really big on lists. best singles of 2009. best albums of my high school years... though it is sort of my type of nostalgic deal. So I think that maybe here i can put together a list piece by piece. And the other day I thought one list worthy of my time would be my favorite love songs. Today's song is one i'm sure is worthy of the list. That song is 'The Weather' by Built to Spill. This is a band that I have mad respect for. They're rocking out and doing their thing and not nothin is going to stop them.
marsch is in the older than your typical indie rock god but he has the moves to fight off any little popsters and hot young, maybe fame greedy newbies. his guitar skills are beyond question and really bring the rock to indie rock. just check out their cover of Freebird and you may understand what i mean. they do this epic classic justice. oh! bonus song. that's what you get for being so patient for another music tuesday. ha, i kid. no one is reading.

Back to the weather though. It's a love song that expresses the pleasure brought by loving a person. Even the most mundane conversational topics can be made marvelous when talking with your love. because the most common things in life wouldn't be interesting without this special lover.

you know what my new friend made me realize though? just a song is nothing to be excited about. All music tuesday has really turned out to be is me blathering on about my opinions on music with little return for any potential readers. what is my opinion? on music? pshaw not even worth a penny. i figured it'd be nice to expose readers to new music but a song a week (and less) isn't going to do anything of the sort. So possibly a playlist of the month would be a better idea. we'll see. i'm not a fantastic playlist creator, it usually takes a decent amount of inspiration for me, but how could i not draw inspiration from life around me? okay rambling again. payce.

pic of the week

for this week? and maybe other weeks? somehow it's sooo hard for me to stay consistent with these things. i swear i have about four drafts sitting in my account for music tuesday. maybe i'll get to it tomorrow? anyway, here is the pic of this week!

Ramette, Philippe. patience. booooooom. 10 Mar 2008. 13 Jul 2009 < http://www.booooooom.com/wp-content/uploads/2008/10/pr_02.jpg >

^according to the internet, this is loosely how you cite a photo from a website.

oh this is just my man in the sea waiting for me. I am late as usual, but who can be with a man who is not patient?

going no poo

I bought a bunch of supplies for alternative cleaners the other day. vinegar, baking powder, borax, lemon juice. better ingredients than other cleaners that are toxic and harmful to the environment. These can go to make simple concoctions of biodegradable cleaners that get the job done. With these ingredients I am going to experiment with going no poo (as opposed to shampoo). the reason for doing this would be primarily to avoid harmful additives such as SLS one of those millions of suspected carcinogens. i guess i should start watching out for some of them. but really this is a dilemma that everybody has to face and i'm not sure how we're expected to avoid so many things in fear of this elusive but persistent 'cancer.' w/e.

Currently I use nexxus shampoo (never tested on animals) and bed head conditioner, and wash my hair about every other day, conditioning most days. I might need to mess around with the patterns with my new cleaning supplies, and I'm thinking of still using name brands every once and a while. From what i've read simply no poo treatment after three months will leave your hair a little funky so traditional shampooing every once and a while (every six weeks from one source) is in order. here i will track my progress and results.

day one. (july 3)
i discovered that this method easier to use in the shower than the bath. ) :
mixed up the ingredients and everything went well. i now know why some people say they can't handle the vinegar smell. it was pretty overwhelming to me, having it drip down my face and sit on top of my head for a bit. but the rinse got the smell out enough for me. now my hair feels nice and soft.
