This week's song is a relic from the nineties. It is one I have found people a year or two younger than me don't care about this band but was part of an obsession for many people in their mid twenties now. It is Weezer's 'Only in Dreams.'
now for a little sidenote- the purpose of this section is to introduce readers to music that they may not have have been exposed to yet. my opinion is by no means professional, or even very researched, it is just the one of a sort of hip young girl with her ears perked up. so when i tell you that i think that only in dreams is the height of rock in the 90s well i may not know shit about rock in the nineties but as far as my exposure goes (living in the 90s) that is my opinion.
So a friend of mine and i had an argument one night about which was better, Bright Eyes's "A Perfect Sonnet" or this song. I would say that this song is a gem because this song contains the most passionate solo i have ever heard. It is the definition of epic. And while the perfect sonnet has a perfect form and equal emotion it does not compare to the simple longing that Rivers expresses in this song of an unrequited love that we can all relate to. have lamented over, and just never gotten.
oops. hard drive incapacitated at the moment. check back later for DL.
one girl's journey towards sustainability, having a life, and enjoying it. oh and cats.

coffee & environment
At the age of 21 I was a fan of neither coffee or tea. Today at 22 1/2 i love tea and have only a couple of weeks ago grown to be fond of coffee. I still am a complete nub and don't really know what's what but I do know that there is a considerable amount of market politics going on with coffee. (As are most agricultural products) I have heard a lot of people talk about fair trade but I am ashamed to admit that I never listened carefully since I wasn't into coffee. Right now I'm just drinking safeway organic coffee but I am still concerned about the farmers so I'll have to see if i can find a fair trade organic brand. Which I suppose shouldn't be too difficult in Santa Cruz. possible follow up on this next time i buy coffee!
In other coffee impacts, Jane Goodall has announced that Tanzanian agricultural practices are good for chimpanzees!! And of course we know that Jane is the global aficionado on chimps so how can we say no? Included in the article is some information about both chimps and coffee that you may find to be of interest. I think that we're just crazy about chimps because they're related to us but their endangerment is such an ecology problem, and I don't sympathize very well. Sure our human impacts should be so bad that we're endangering so many species. In fact I will recognize that the rates at which we are losing biodiversity are alarming. The biologists general definition of a mass extinction is when half of the extant species disappearing in half a million years. Scientists have for the most part come to agree that this is happening now but I believe that we should be addressing the causes and be more concerned about the much more widespread effect that climate change will have. We can't go running around trying to pick up the pieces of our environmental destruction by saving one species at a time, this is the time to address the problems head on. I am going to stop myself before going into a full on rant, but I hope that short discussion was educational and thought provoking. Please take some time and consideration to appreciate and protect the other organisms we share this planet with in any way you find right for you. Even if it is just buying coffee for the chimps ( :

Music Time
so as you can tell music tuesday has quickly become music (every other) tuesday. which is fine with me. i guess i'll move into this blog thing slowly.
as you may be able to guess i am silly. I LOVE silly things. A friend of mine once said, I'm gonna find the next guy you're into and just tell him you love silly things and you'll be together forever, or something to that effect.
This week's song is just that. Silly to the point of ridiculous. It makes me laugh and it includes a pop element that encourages me to listen to it again and again, despite the fact that it's sort of retarded and childish. It's a mash-up with a song from Lazy Town (sort of reminds you of one hit wonder band Crazy Town huh) a kid's show, and Lil John (owner of CRUNK JUICE!!!) who will always crack me up or disgust me. it's a toss up. Either way i think this video being a hit represents a wonderful wild creativity born from the endless freedom that is inherent to the internet. we should almost be proud our society has built up such a network of resources and ideas that could produce this modern piece of media. props to Mastgrr
download of this song available in the info section of this video on youtube.

indiemart
when I was in SF recently I attended something that i would like you to be aware of called the indie-mart.
It is a fantastic event where they have food drinks and independent merchandisers offering a wide variety of fashionable wares. From shirt printing on the spot, to carefully crafted recycled clothing, to fly accessories, and of course all the cuties in the crowd, there wasn't much left to be wanted. The pricing was a bit high for me (as a po' college student, but not as a person who loves supporting local sweatshop free businesses!!) so i didn't get much but i did manage to find this gem of a necklace!
So aside from being a really hip and happening place to shop, it's a great event because it supports local businesses. Now I would need some help understanding the true economics of this, but I believe local markets of any amenity are beneficial in that it fosters a sense of community consumerism and awareness of how we get all the STUFF we have. It comes from the hard work of people around us! And if Indie Mart wasn't doing enough for the livelihood and style of the SF community, they threw in a little something extra. This time at the door they were accepting donations at the door for San Francisco Women Against Rape .
This event definitely left me feeling great and happy about my shopping experience. It was just so fun and good for everyone involved that you'll have to see for yourself. the next one is on april 26th.

Music Tuesday
alright so on tuesdays i'm going to link to a song that i like and write a short bit about why i like it.
my first music tuesday features another first for a friend of mine, Lucas Mathis. I had the chance to speak with him about his music. Here is a little bit about the man. An aspiring dj originally from LA, he is the man behind Ma Yeah. The debut album Chill & Look Calm was self released by Mr. Mathis on March 1st, 2009. it was created for the RPM Challenge. Mixmaster Mathis says he wished for a little more time to work on the album but it was nice to have the deadline out there to create the pressure to get things done. I know for a fact that he was super high for the entire making of the album, so don't let anyone tell you that stoners aren't worth shit. This is my favorite track, "Spacecoder" which features a sweet robot just lookin for love. it has got a nice beat and this space robo could sweep me off of my feet
and here is a link that will let you download the entire album.

octopuses, octopi, octopodes. three correct terms for the plural of octopus

a pretty pic from somefield. I've always liked the octopus. It is one of the natures finest aquatic creations. They are super intelligent animals, and even given an honorary vertebrate status because of their high level of mental development. here is a video of a cunning octopus in the Seattle aquarium
